My Teaching Biography
My first teaching experiences began in the mid 1970's, teaching drawing and water color in Adult Education Art Classes for the City of Aurora's Recreation Program (Colorado). This was followed by instructing Adult Education classes in historic woodworking and metal smithing for Otero Community College and the National Park Service. In 1981 I received a BS degree in Education, focused on graphic arts and metal technology. At this time I also was granted Class A teacher certification from the State of Colorado, a certification I maintained for twenty five years. From 1981-1986 I taught furniture construction and design and metals technology at Metropolitan State College in Denver. From 1987 -1989 I assissted watercolorist Buffalo Kaplinski with watercolor classes at Art Students League of Denver. Beginning in 1990 I taught high school art and middle school wood shop for Aurora Public Schools, leaving that field in 1999. Since leaving teaching in the public school sector my teaching activities have been limited to private art instruction and conducting painting and drawing workshops, as well as art history presentations and lectures.
To acquire and maintain Class A State Teacher Certification required dedicated professional study and discipline. I have developed multiple disciplinary skills in education pertaining to individualized student learning modes. I understand the difficulties of learning, and always attempt to create learning environments that can adjust to personalized learning experiences. I also believe in maintaining a positive feedback, safe, non threatening learning environment.
